Instagram vs Google: Where Should Your Marketing Budget Actually Go?

This is one of the most common questions from new store owners, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you're selling and who's buying it.

When Google Ads wins

Google Search Ads work best when people already know they want your kind of product and are actively searching for it — "buy running shoes online South Africa," for example. You're capturing existing demand, not creating it. This tends to convert well for products with clear, searchable intent.

When Instagram/Meta wins

Instagram and Facebook ads work best for products people didn't know they wanted yet — visually-driven, impulse-friendly categories like fashion, home goods, or beauty. You're creating demand through the image or video itself, not capturing an existing search.

The honest starting point for a small budget

If you're working with a limited first budget (say, under R5,000/month), don't split it evenly across both. Pick the one that matches your product type, run it properly for 4–6 weeks with a real testing budget for a few ad variations, and only add the second channel once the first one is proven to convert.

The metric that actually matters

Not "likes" or "reach" — cost per purchase, measured against your actual margin. A campaign with great engagement and no profitable sales isn't working, no matter how good it looks in the ads dashboard.
