Shopify Store or Custom Website? How to Actually Decide

Most people ask "Shopify or a normal website?" backwards. The platform isn't the decision — what your business actually needs to do is.

Ask this first: are you selling products online, or generating enquiries?

If customers need to be able to browse, add to cart, and pay you directly on the site, you need Shopify (or another e-commerce platform). There's no way around it — checkout, inventory, and payment gateways aren't things you bolt onto a normal website affordably.

If your business runs on quotes, consultations, bookings, or leads — a service business, a professional practice, a B2B company — a custom website usually serves you better than forcing everything through an e-commerce platform that's built for carts and checkouts you don't need.

Where it gets less obvious

Some businesses genuinely sit in between: a handful of products alongside a service offering, or a retailer who mostly wants leads right now but expects to sell online later. In that case, the honest answer is usually to build the website first, scoped so a Shopify store can be added later without a rebuild — not to force e-commerce onto a business that isn't ready to fulfil online orders yet.

The cost of getting it wrong

Businesses that put a service offering on Shopify usually end up fighting the platform — awkward page builders, apps stacked on apps trying to make it behave like a normal site. Businesses that try to bolt e-commerce onto a basic website usually end up rebuilding within a year once orders start coming in and the workarounds stop holding up.

The actual question to ask yourself

Not "which platform is better" — but "will a customer complete a purchase, right here, right now, without talking to me first?" If yes, Shopify. If no, a custom website almost always serves you better, and costs less to get right the first time.
